We will therefore support you in any way that is necessary for your individual needs.

Earn while you learn by joining us as a Trainee PDI instructor...

Regardless of whether you chose to do your initial training with us or not, you can come to use for the next stages of your journey towards becoming a driving instructor.

Once you have completed Part 1 and Part 2, and have completed at least 40 hours of training you are able to apply for a PDI Trainee instructor licence.

This enables you to continue to develop your teaching skills, whilst still undergoing training but also teaching real students to drive and being able to charge for lessons.

In our opinion this is the best way to learn and develop those vital coaching skills to allow you to successfully pass the final part of your journey – the ADI Part 3 test.

The three tests involved when becoming an instructor...

Part 1

ADI Part 1 - Theory Test

Just like when your pupils will be learning to drive, you will have to complete a theory test, just with some additional components.

Multiple Choice Questions - 4 key areas and you need to score at least 80% in each area.

Hazard Perception Test - score minimum of 76% on the clips.

Part 2

ADI Part 2 - The Driving Ability Test

Testing your driving ability, however in much more detail than the normal learner driver test.

  • You Will be asked 3 "Tell ME" Questions
  • You Will be Asked 2 "Show Me" Questions.
  • You will be asked to do 2 manoeuvres.
  • You will drive for 20 minutes independently.
  • You may go on the motorway.
  • You are allowed no more than 6 driving faults.
  • You are NOT allowed any serious or dangerous faults.

Part 3

ADI Part 3 - Instructional Ability Test

Testing your ability to teach a lesson.

You will be expected to bring a pupil to the test.

The examiner will observe you teaching a lesson and mark your lesson based on the 17 key competencies. (You should be aware of these as part of your training)

They will then give you feedback at the end along with your mark / grade for the lesson. (You have 3 attempts at this)

Frequently Asked Questions

I work Full time, can I still train to be a Driving Instructor?

Of course, you can! Don’t worry you can still train to become a driving instructor whilst doing a full time job. The training consists of 3 parts. You can complete the different parts at your own pace and some aspects can be completed in your own time at home.

If you need flexibility with your training, then let us know when you get started on your journey and we will try our best to support you and work around your schedule as much as possible.

Do I need to provide my own car for training?

No, whilst you are completing your instructor training you do not need to provide your own vehicle.

You will complete your initial training in one of our comfortable, reliable vehicles with our trainer.

When it comes to taking your Part 2/ Part 3 exams you can use your own vehicle or we can help you to source a vehicle if needed especially if you are out on a PDI Trainee Licence.

Will there be any hidden training costs?

No, there will not be any hidden costs.

We will be very clear from the outset as to what the costs will be so that you will be confident that you know what to expect in terms of financial costs for your training.

What is required for me to begin my training?

To become a driving instructor in the UK you need to meet the requirements set by the DVSA.

  • You must have held a full UK driving licence for 3+ Years
  • Have 5 points or less on your licence.
  • You must be able to read a number plate from the required distance (you are allowed to wear glasses for this)
  • You must be able to pass a DBS check with the UK government.
  • You must also be able to register as a PDI and obtain a Personal Reference Number.
How long will the training take?

This is a difficult question to answer – the amount of time your training will take depends on a number of different factors …

  • The amount of time you are able to dedicate to your training.
  • The amount of time it takes to find and pass the 3 different tests.
  • The amount of time it takes for you to feel ready to pass the tests.

As with all driving tests there are often long wait times to get the tests, so please do bear this in mind.

Will all my training be in person?

Although most of your training will be conducted in person, because this is the most effective method of training, some of the training will take place online.

We have our own learning portal that you will be signed up to when you register with us and that is full of lots of important learning resources to help you with your journey.
